an engine interests me like no other. its a mass of plastic, metal and liquid. all working together at a furious pace to propel you down the road or track. theres just something about metal parts rotating with the aid of some lubricant that makes me wonder. these are parts that weigh a good amount spinning at a blistering pace, for sometimes hours at a time. yet, its safe to drive them down the street to your grandmas house. there are also several explosions per second going on with this almost impossible feat. yet, here we are.

there is an intesity with competition driving that only comes with certain people. F1 drivers have it, the stewards certainly dont. aggressive driving seems to be punished and its quite annoying to read about. there is a quote from ayrton senna that sums it all up. its being used more and more since the senna film was relased. im not gonna post it here im sure you can find it if you look around enough. racing is not about going out there and playing nice and a fun time. if you want fun, go to a track day. racing is competition, the other guy is not out there to let up and put you in front. you must push, and you must fight your way to the front line.

racing is a business, and i understand. but it should not be soiled by money, politics or beauracracy. it should only be dictated by performance of the machine and the driver skill. the engineering that goes into it is in the millions of dollars and it is understood by so few. the skill of driving involved is mastered by so few. this is what put its out from just driving around in circles. the athleticism it takes to drive a car extremely fast for long periods of time is mind bending. yet, simple people just see it as driving round again and again.

ive never associated myself with any scene or style. i dont just like drift cars, i dont just like hot rods, and i dont just like motorcycles. it just isnt right to limit myself to one style or group of things. my earliest memory of motorsport was seeing a superbike race on tv at my aunts house in san diego. im not gonna google it to find out who was racing and name them like the other pretentious bloggers out there. i couldnt tell you who was on what bike. but i can say that from then on my goal was to drag my knee like they were doing on any race track that i could find. it just progressed from there.

my whole family is comprised of fast drivers. i think between my dad and his brothers they have more speeding tickets than we can count. so its only logical that, that kind of behavior would trickle down to me. we have always been a very technical family, extremely blue collar as i had stated in my last post. we never called in repairmen, we just fixed it all ourselves as best we could. and we learn. always take the time to learn.

when i was growing up, i always took my things apart. toys, bicycles, skateboard, whatever was around. sometimes i wouldnt be able to put it back together but dad was always there to lend a guiding hand. i owe all of my abilities to my father. and i owe my sensibilities to my mother. there are no other people on this planet that i respect more.

in building my cars and bikes, it was never for anyone but myself. they were never to be featured in articles, never to gain praise at events. the pure satisfaction that when i walk up to the driveway and see my car, i will enjoy every second of driving it. and knowing full well that i had my hand in constructing it. every nut, bolt, and clamp turned by my hand. im in the middle of putting the car back together and reconstructing the bike for street use. though, things will be put on a bit of hold for a few months while i take off for vacation.

recently ive been reading up on mike rowe. he is on a PR push to bring back the respect of a blue collar job. he basically says that america has alienated the blue collar laborer and forgotten all about where we came from. we have become a nation that celebrates shortcuts and shortcomings. my parents always taught me that hard work pays off and the quick easy money, goes away just as quick and easy. both of my parents came to the US with little to no money, and a duffel bag with clothes. they arrived on US soil with my older brother and mom was pregnant with me. and here we are, business owner, homeowner and successful. sure we arent stupid rich, but we are comfortable and able to maintain our lives during this time of financial uncertainty.

mike rowe celebrates the fact that people like my parents are out there willing to do the jobs that most look down on. and i salute him for that. he recently testified in front of the US Senate on this issue. issue being the lack of labor in this country. he urges them to back his stand on hard work and skilled labor. there are 200,000 jobs available for manufacturing in the US and they arent filled. there is a high unemployment rate, yet a labor shortage at the same time. why? because people dont wanna do hard work anymore. they would rather push it off to the next guy. there is no respect for people that are not afraid of hard work. we are painted as slovenly, dirty creatures. the roads we drive on, the food we eat, the energy that powers our homes? there are people out there working away to keep our country going. and like he says, the skill gap is growing and we need to close it. there is an illusion that a 4 year degree guarantees some kind of success. i learned a long time ago that it doesnt. there are very few people that i know, with college degrees that actually work in the field that they went to school for. everyone else has some mediocre job that they barely get paid for and has nothing to do with their degree.

i love the united states. i just dont love what the people are doing to it. this campaign hits close to home for me. and i will do nothing but support it and spread the word where i can. follow the link below to a short video mike did outlining what he testified to the US Senate.

ive been away. for a while now... i still keep up on blogs and check out what i can but most of em are just reposts and just filler. id like to thank mickie and marko on the east coast for keeping shit real. we all share the same amount of contempt for this industry/society. ive been getting messages from people on forums telling me they keep up with the blog and id like to thank them too for the continuous support. please leave a message or comment so i know youre out there. otherwise i just wont know.

its been a busy year so far. currently gettin the final shit nailed/bolted down to the flathead so it can go in the car and be tested before speed week in bonneville. i will be attending to offer support. and if that wasnt exciting enough ill be booking a trip to montreal for the Canadian GP. ive been fortunate enough to attend almost every kind of race there is, and im not gonna stop now, even if it breaks the bank.

aside from automotive news im lookin for a butcher course to attend. if you have any ideas/insight, please drop a line. i love to cook but i just feel like cutting/butchering meat is more along my lines of interest.

i have alot of issue with modifying cars for a living. mainly because of internet forums and youtube. ill just chalk it up to the internet being the problem. the DIY sections are great for people that are mechanically inclined. not so much for the idiot that thinks he can do anything. the idiots usually mess things up further, and cause me headaches in order to fix the issue. if its an electrical nightmare, i will flat out turn them away.

i was asked to do a portmatch, throttle body to manifold. thats fine, not a difficult thing but time consuming. quoted them about 200. they were immediately offended because the youtube video they saw only lasted 5 minutes. so in their mind it was wrong for me to charge them 200 dollars for a 5 minute job. and wondering why it was a 2-3 day turnaround. hmm. so if the video only lasts so long, thats how long the job should take. this coming from someone who has no experience in anything mechanical. going from a 64mm opening to 70mm. 6mm difference. gonna take a little longer than 5 minutes. i feel like just turning these idiots away.

im thoroughly fed up with these car communities and the low lives that inhabit them now. yeah i know there always the pockets of good people and i find them here and there, thats fine. but forums and car meets are a thing of the past, now ill be honest, ill look at forums for info on cars but i wont be going to meets and get togethers. its all just a bunch of weird people that are socially awkward anyway.

lately there has been quite a bit of theft. first for me was when carl rydquists porsche was stolen shortly after his victory in the las vegas redline time attack event. then i hear of one of the cobb guys gettin their trailer jacked. after that i think, was when alex pfeiffer got his helmet snaked at the vegas formula d. and now i hear of cody parkhouse getting his car AND trailer stolen from long beach. what the fuck man? low lives just stealing cars and gear just cause they cant do it themselves. i dont understand how people can stoop that low and sleep at night. they deserve all the bad shit that happens to them. i hope they rot.

hectic. thats one way to put it. my apologies for this dying. ive got the internet at work now, so i can resume posting a little more regularly. met up with the fam at formula d this past weekend at none other than irwindale. i really have no desire to go to these events other than to support my friends and maybe get some shirts or whatever on the cheap. i met up with alex pfeiffer, will roegge, and the mayday garage crew. all cool homies. this was the first time i met up with JohnP from mayday, since they reside in the lone star state. nice to meet a fan of my crappy work. i think im a bigger fan of their stuff. all good though, always cool to meet a new group of homies.

what have i been doin. well i went to vietnam for almost a month. so much shit happened i cant even begin to describe. its just one of those, if you werent there, you cant fathom it. above is a pic of a motor i will have a hand in building if my scheduling works right. ive been employed at a ford dealership for the past few months, im undergoing diesel mechanic training. but my background in smog has been pushing me forward there too. its a pretty laid back place. i like it. back to the motor. its a dLi (dick landy inc.) spec/bonneville spec flathead, built by none other than mike landy. sitting atop it are 2 holleys and a BDS blower. a moldex crank, and manley internals. nothing was spared for this build. the sad thing, after he built it a decade ago, it sat on the stand. other than the dyno test this motor has not been run on the salt. its back now to be converted to mechanical injection, and to change over to a vortech style centrifugal blower. much like the ron main setup that mike also built. you may know it in the flatfire bonneville streamliner. anyhow, thats been life in a fast nutshell.

oh ill have more news on the ISF too as soon as we get to align the planets and make time to track it.

oh, and my LS400 (UCF10) finally came home from the body shop. its been sitting at the shop for 2 years while we battled insurance. we ended up losing. and then it sat for another year at a friends body shop, he did the work for a trade, so he took his time. dont really mind though, its not like we have a shortage of cars here. its sitting on stock air, and its dumped cause the battery is out. ill be installing coilovers as soon as i get it re registered and the interior straightened out. theres a preview.

may, as always, turns into the busiest month of the year. i started a new job with ford. im in the middle of starting all of my ford certs, then i move to diesel training. should be fun, the money is pretty good, so im not complaining. we ran off to button willow on my day off this week to hang out with the lotus challenge guys and their personal track day. it was so nice. the roster was under 20 cars, and it was an all day free for all. well, they paid to get in, but you get where im going. scooby brought out his super hatch. i finally got to get some pics of it. i think someone had asked me to post up pics of the hatch, so there you go. ill have more up in another entry dedicated to his car. its an awesome piece of work. he basically did all the work himself, and machined most of the parts for the suspension. his sway bar setup alone put its way ahead of most cars on track.

normally, id only talk cars here, but last night was somethin special. so i get a call to go to santa monica for a Laphroaig (pronounced La-Froy) tasting. now, ive been to several tastings in the past year, and theyve all been different. some brands you get alot of pours, some brands you get a little. Laphroaig was definitely not the latter. they served up 18 year, 25 year, and 10 year cask strength. all for the low low price of free. fantastic. well, i paid parking and for a beer at the bar. the presentation as nice, and set in the outdoor lounge at the Shangri-La hotel on Ocean. swanky type place that i normally wouldnt be caught at. but hey, free scotch calls. appetizers are brought out, the rep from Laphroaig goes up on stage, Mr. Simon Brooking. his job is to basically be the life of the party. and what a presenter, he was. keeping everyone laughing and having a good time isnt easy. but a little bit of high dollar scotch always helps.

so the drinks keep pouring, and the crowd is goin nutso. i meet up with some friends of a friend, and we end up hangin around for a while to kill time before our dinner reservation which we managed to miss completely. but for good reason, while we were waiting Simon comes over and asks us if we enjoyed the scotch. well, what bad things could we say? none, whatsoever. he excuses himself, and comes back a few minutes later with 2 bottles in hand. one, unavailable for the US, bottle of Laphroaig Triple Wood, and one Ardmore 30 year. our jaws collectively dropped. lets pour. now, im not gonna get into tasting talk and this and that, just trust me, in that it was amazing. so, good reason for missing the dinner reservation right? yeah, of course, a free bottle of scotch worth over 400 dollars, and one free bottle that you cant even get in the states. id say thats a good way to end a friday night in So Cal.

there are some pics, to quite possibly the worst race weekend ever.

las vegas, nv - round 3 of the redline time attack series. im not a fan of las vegas. i dont bother going unless its to take out of towners, or if we are going for an event. this weekend, was the latter, with a shitty ending. actually i should have taken a cue of how the weekend would pan out on arrival.

we roll into vegas at about 6pm saturday, the whole event had been up and running since friday so everyone was well settled and choppin it up on the course. we get through the gate, and meet with AE Performance and their rig. its nice to have a giant mobile home to sit in. news we get, M3 is out with clutch problems, 335i is out due to turbo singing its swan song. so thats 2 out of 8 friendlies down. fine, lets go to dinner, and regroup in the morning and knock this one out. if youre in vegas and hankering for a buffet run, i definitely recommend the wynn buffet. about 45 bucks but well worth it.

sunday morning 6am cruising to the track, we realize how sketchy the area where LV motor speedway is located. so we get to the track as fast as possible. register and get the car tech'd. worried that the car would be to low so we were expecting to be DQ'd from the start. it ended up barely passing. but we were held up because we didnt have fire protection. should have read the books. shit. well the downed cars at AE helped, so we cannibalize the extinguisher and bracket from the M3 and make our way back and get the ok to be on track. burke gets on, does some laps, then pit in. car isnt doin what its supposed to. and he wants the other sway bar in. so under the car i go. swap em out, and in the middle of installing the sway i notice the cv axle is spitting grease out. great. after deliberations, we decide that its best to just scrap the day and not beat the car up. reason being, we still needed to drive the 300 miles home.

so in the midst of all this the track setup was a little funny. there was no one at pit exit watching for cars and stopping people from just flying out there. i mean where we were they were metering the cars and warning them to keep an eye out before exiting. but pit exit was really far and long, so by the time you exited the rest of the cars were barreling down. someone was gonna get hit. and sadly paul dentice ended up a casualty. on one of his hot pracitce laps a guy in a dodge magnum came out of pit exit and didnt look. paul exited turn 2 and slammed into the back. ending the day for the AE 370z. the weekend would have been an easy win. but after that there was no coming back. hilariously though, he went to the officials and came back with new number plates and window visor and threw it on his wifes Merceds C320.

so we hustle of to AJ Latteri's and he is suiting up and gettin ready to go out in his white lotus. awesome. Kenny Chieu is also hangin out with AJ in pit. Kenny has a pretty damn legit MR-S thats setup beautifully that he drove up from So Cal too. haha. we had all gone out to dinner at the wynn the night before so we had a chance to chat and talk about a plan of attack. great guy. check out his blog. haha i googled you dude. AJ went out, and i went back to the AE camp. Kenny came over to hang out and chat. a little while later AJ comes over in his street clothes. 3rd gear had blown in the little white monster. great. Kenny had been worried to cause his car was knocking a bit. another point to vegas. we were losing the game horribly at this point.

so out of the army of cars we were running only 2 came out of the weekend unscathed. 996 Turbo and Boxster Cup car. 2 out 8 survived the mess. funny cause it was 2 out of 8 that were out the beginning of race day. thanks alot vegas. we left with our tails behind our legs on this one.

internet car forums. what a place for witnessing massive failure, impressive builds, a wealth of information, and the insecurity of most male characters. i can hardly stomach the daily onslaught of crap that gets spewed from the vast majority of members on several forums. but the thing that bothers me most, and ill call out just one forum here, clublexus moderators.

i got a stern talkin to the other day about baiting people for arguments of the use of their ISF. mr. burke had posted a thread on the install of his OS diff. i posted a response saying, hey, glad to see the pics are up, but i dont think any of these owners care about being on track, theyd rather have loud exhausts and pose for pictures in parking lots. or something to that extent, but you get the gist of what im sayin right? right. DAVEGS4, ZOMG super mod, got uppity and edited my post. sayin i shouldnt bait people blah blah blah. if you dont like my post and what i say, then ban me. but leave my post alone, so everyone can see that im calling them out. this is america jack, and ill say what i want, when i want.

another issue with forums, the goals of most members are horribly skewed and unrealistic. and they love to spout terms they know nothing about. here are a few of my favorites

-unsprung weight
-power to weight ratio
-hp per liter

these terms are stupid for street driven cars. which, regardless of what mods they have, thats what their cars are. what i love the most is how these guys call themselves weekend warriors. its like really? weekend warrior? so youre at the track MOST weekends out of the year? im usually at the track about 2 times a month, i never see your car there. of course theres always an excuse, oh my car isnt ready, i need to get these parts put on before i can go. well, the answer is, no you dont. ive seen plenty of stock crapboxes run around on track. i respect the guy with the old school ford escort hammering it out on the track more than you. why? because hes doin the thing, and not talkin on forums about it. to explain my rage for instance, i went as far as offering to pay for 50 percent of registration fees to a track day. i had 2 responses. one from a guy that was already registered, and another guy that was already comin with us. my goal was to get more people interested. but, like i said above, theyd rather pose for pictures in a parking lot.

and thats it for my rant. internet forums = fail.

so this is the new shit. Carbon Fiber Mac Strut and Upright. this particular setup is for the next wave of small, compact cars. full carbon upright, and strut, fiberglass "spring", and a plastic top hat. makes for a near 10 pound weight reduction per corner. not too shabby. perhaps a set for the SC is needed to help with the rapid weight loss program she is on. but yeah, what a beautiful piece of machinery, maybe its wasted on small cars. maybe not.

oh lord, what an exhausting weekend. F1 in Aussie land was nuts! i feel so bad for Vettel. he was rollin smooth and calm at the front, and bam, failure. Alonso was about pissing me off, and too bad for Hamilton having to stop in and losing position. he wasnt too happy on the radio at the end there. congrats goes to Jenson Button for pickin up back to back wins in Australia. and then, we departed Sunday morning for Redline Time Attack. we got there and went straight for the AE performance booth. met up with our friends, and settled right in. Paul Walker was there, being bombarded by fans and overzealous people. so the roster was Paul Dentice in the 370Z, Paul Walker in the M3, and Richie Taylor in the 335i. sadly on our arrival, we find out Richies car had a fuel pump issue and was out for the day. so last night i drove on down to venice and feasted on grilled cheese sandwiches with the connoiseur himself, Mr. Will Roegge. the same WR thats filmed countless vids for Speedhunters, Formula D, and All Star Bash. some people may have issues with him for filming grass in slow motion. but the rest absolutely love his work. so last night during dinner, i had asked him a million questions about his upcoming cross country trip for Keep Drifting Fun. Will and fellow video magician Joshua Herron will pile into a 74 VW Westfalia van and cruise slowly across America filming grassroots drift events and some Formula D stops.

So, Will is a really nice guy. and i dont say this just to say it, hes a good friend. everytime i run into him at an event he usually greets with a smile and a handshake, never brushes anyone off. thats how you do things. but i really admire this effort for his trip, he is actually doing alot of the prep work for the van himself. and that means countless hours grinding and sanding the shit out of the paint job on the ol westy. below is a time lapse vid to show you the massive effort in getting the van ready for the open road in about a month.

so a few beers were consumed and we went on outside to find the grilled cheese truck closing up, but we were there to wait on the kogi truck. after discussing where he would visit and what theyd do, it amazed me. they were in for quite a trip, and quite the welcome from some of the crews theyd be running with all along the country. hope you guys really enjoy the midwest bash. that should be awesome.

ive not really chimed in on the whole toyota recall issue. but i want everyone to be clear on how i feel about this whole situation. there has been so much in the news, blogs, and internet, about the whole debacle. i support toyota 100 percent. they have been a part of my family and will always be. the issues should have been handled differently and much better. perhaps this would have been shed in a different light. but then again, the media does have the uncanny effect of blowing things way out of proportion. ive known this for some time now, so i take all stories with a grain of salt. while i do not believe that floor mats or what have you caused these accidents, i do believe something is wrong. lets keep that straight, but not in such staggering numbers as everything has made it out to be. Akio Toyoda himself has taken responsibility on himself, and that to me, is a huge gesture on his part. and the fact that he has gone to washington, in front of congress and the NHTSA. so there have been various reports and stories on this whole case. right now, i would like to offer my condolences to families that have lost lives. but we should take from this tragedy, to teach drivers, not just to drive, but to also know how to react in these situations. drivers should have known what to do in these cases. people panicked and lost focus on what to do. not one of the toyotas/lexus in question had a strange automatic lever. all of them could have easily been placed in neutral and situations averted. but this is all hearsay really, since i was not present in any of those accidents.

the story that bothers me most is of CHP office Mark Saylor, i have no idea what the situation was but it apparently was due to unintended acceleration. i believe that officers should be taught on what to do in similar situations, yet his life and family members lives were lost. was something else terribly wrong?

this first link, is typical of a "news" source putting together a report on a widespread recall. much like the audi 5000 and GM side gas tank recall of the 80s and 90s, all of it is exagerrated to instill fear, and not really educate people.

i want everyone and i mean EVERYONE to take all of this and realize that, your car must be in good shape maintenance wise, you never know whats gonna happen in an emergency. mainly your brake system. i cannot stress that enough, at least once a day i can hear people going down the street with a horribly worn brake system screeching and grinding all day. yet, they keep on driving. so please, get your car checked often, and maintain it.

since ive been home everyday since saturday night, not doing jack shit. ive been making my plan of attack for the 57 pickup. have to get the frame, battle version will hopefully be boxing it for me. and ill do the rest of the transfer of parts, in the coming month. and if this works out, ill have a frame to begin my rat truck. stance wise, id like this one to be built up like the one above. for the rat, mostly rusted panels, and dents here and there. sitting on fatty fat wheels. clean wheels none the less. and a gorgeous looking engine under the hood. maybe not even american.

money has been tight this year, its been terrible for business. everyone really retracted alot since the whole meltdown with the stock market. and it hit us. not as badly as it could have but we definitely felt it. i am very grateful that we are still up and running. and i look forward to 2010 being a very prosperous year. the year is coming to an end very quickly.

looking back ive had much less projects to take in and that kinda bothers me. looks like i have a few to start with in the new year so ill be happy with that. mainly getting my baby back on the road and getting the 57 pickup hummin. working on an art project too. stay tuned for that one.
